Today, through a series of pastoral letters to First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and the People of God in Canada, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) affirmed its ongoing commitment to renewing and strengthening relations with Indigenous Peoples at the national, regional, and especially the local level.

Each of the distinct pastoral letters in this series, entitled That We May Walk Together, is the fruit of many months of listening, dialogue, and encounter with Indigenous Peoples, especially through Listening Circles held in dioceses across the country, the Indigenous Delegation to the Vatican in April 2022, and Pope Francis’ Apostolic Voyage to Canada in July of the same year.

Having heard from Indigenous Survivors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Youth, and inspired by the witness of Pope Francis during his “penitential pilgrimage” in Canada, who encouraged Canada’s Bishops to continue walking with Indigenous People’s along the path of truth, justice, healing, reconciliation and hope, these letters present a framework for local engagement by Bishops with Indigenous Peoples in their dioceses/eparchies, including:

• Continuing to dialogue and discern the most effective mechanism by which respectful and fruitful collaboration can continue at the national, regional and local levels;
• Fulfilling a pledge, made at the 2021 CCCB Plenary Assembly, to undertake fundraising to support locally-discerned projects through the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (which has raised over $9 million so far and is on track to meet its five-year, $30-million commitment);
• Supporting opportunities to make Indigenous culture more widely known, including by working with Catholic educational institutions, seminaries, religious houses, and programs of pastoral formation;
• Accompanying Indigenous Peoples in the pursuit of justice, according to the spirit of the United Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as well as Catholic Social Teaching;
• Working together with local community leaders to address social challenges, including addictions, suicide, violence, poverty, and incarceration;
• Celebrating the great role that women play in many Indigenous faith communities; and
• Identifying new forms of responsibility within dioceses/eparchies to which Indigenous Elders could be invited to share their spiritual wisdom.

In addition, in the Pastoral Letter to the People of God, the Catholic faithful are invited to join their Bishops, in a spirit of love and service, as the local churches take tangible steps toward reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in view of a new era of encounter and dialogue.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) is the national assembly of the Bishops of Canada. It was founded in 1943 and officially recognized by the Holy See in 1948.

This was stated by the Father and Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, on the live broadcast of “Live TV,” announcing the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC in Ukraine.

From September 1, 2023, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine switches to a new style for fixed holidays while adhering to the current Paschalia. This was stated by the Father and Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, on the live broadcast of “Live TV,” announcing the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC in Ukraine.

“Taking into account the numerous requests of the faithful and having conducted prior consultations with the clergy and monastics of our Church about the urgent need to reform the Liturgical Calendar of the UGCC in Ukraine, as well as taking into account pastoral reasoning:

A. The UGCC in Ukraine will switch from September 1, according to the new style (beginning of the Indictus) of the Year of our Lord 2023, to a new style for fixed holidays with the preservation of the current Paschalia.

B. For those parishes or separate communities that feel they are not yet ready for such a step (with the individual blessing of the diocesan bishop), to keep the possibility of liturgical life according to the Julian calendar for the period until the Year of Our Lord 2025,” says the 5th resolution of 93 rd session of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC in Ukraine, which took place on February 1–2, 2023 in Lviv-Bryukhovychi.

According to this decision, starting from September 1 this year, the UGCC in Ukraine will celebrate all fixed feasts in the new style. Primarily, Christmas — on December 25, Epiphany — on January 6, Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary — on March 25, Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary — on October 1, St. Nicholas Day — on December 6, etc.

“I would emphasize that it is not only Christmas! During the summits and preparations for our Synod, we did not talk about Christmas but all the holidays that belong to the fixed cycle. Because it is absolutely against any liturgical rules to change the date of celebration of only one holiday, you cannot change the date of Christmas, moving it to December 25, and leave all the others in the old style,” explained His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

The transition to the new style will take place on September 1, which marks the beginning of the new liturgical year.

Parishes that are not yet ready for such a step will have the opportunity, with the permission of their bishop, to celebrate fixed feasts in the old style until September 2025 (Christmas — January 7, Epiphany — January 19, Annunciation — April 7, etc.). “For those parishes or separate communities that do not feel ready for such a step (with the individual blessing of the diocesan bishop), to keep the possibility of liturgical life according to the Julian calendar for the period until the year 2025,” follows the 2 nd paragraph of the 5th resolution of the Synod.

The UGCC in Ukraine will celebrate Easter and all related holidays in the old style, as before.

“We are switching to the new style only for fixed holidays. We have decided to leave Paschalia as it is today. The actual Paschalia remains valid,” said the Head of the UGCC.

According to the Primate, the calendar reform of the UGCC in Ukraine will have two stages. The first step has already been taken. Regarding the celebration of Easter, the bishops “decided to wait for a while.”

His Beatitude Sviatoslav explained that in 2025 the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea would be celebrated. In preparation for this anniversary, collaborative work is underway in a dialogue between Rome and Constantinople on a renewed Paschalia, according to which all Christians will celebrate Easter on the same day.

The Head of the UGCC noted that when the survey was conducted, the bishops decided that if about 70 % of those support the decision to reform, we can move forward. “But it turned out that there is support for almost 90 %, which is in nearly every diocese. That is, the desire and need for the calendar reform were much more potent than we could have hoped, and this is good news,” His Beatitude Sviatoslav emphasized asking all the faithful to listen to their Mother Church’s voice and maintain unity and unanimity during the calendar reform.

Про це заявив Отець і Глава УГКЦ Блаженніший Святослав у прямому ефірі «Живого телебачення», повідомляючи рішення Архиєрейського Синоду УГКЦ в Україні щодо календарної реформи.

«Взявши до уваги численні прохання віруючих та провівши попередні консультації із духовенством та монашеством нашої Церкви про назрілу потребу реформи Літургійного календаря УГКЦ в Україні, а також зважаючи на душпастирські рації: УГКЦ в Україні перейти з 1 вересня за новим стилем (початок Індикту) 2023 року Божого на новий стиль для нерухомих свят із збереженням чинної Пасхалії», — йдеться у 1-му пункті 5-ї постанови 93-ї сесії Архиєрейського Синоду УГКЦ в Україні, яка відбулася 1–2 лютого 2023 у Львові-Брюховичах.

Відповідно до цього рішення, вже з 1 вересня цього року всі нерухомі свята УГКЦ в Україні святкуватиме за новим стилем. Зокрема, Різдво Христове — 25 грудня, Богоявлення — 6 січня, Благовіщення Пресвятої Богородиці — 25 березня, Покров Пресвятої Богородиці — 1 жовтня, Святого Миколая — 6 грудня тощо.

«Я б наголосив: це не тільки Різдво! Під час дискусій і приготування до нашого Синоду ми не говорили про Різдво, але про всі свята, які належать до нерухомого циклу. Бо це абсолютно проти будь-яких літургійних правил змінювати дату святкування лише одного свята. Не можна змінювати дату Різдва, переносячи на 25 грудня, а всі інші залишати за старим стилем», — пояснив Блаженніший Святослав.

Перехід на новий стиль відбудеться саме 1 вересня, адже в цей день розпочинається новий літургійний рік.

Парафії, які ще не готові до такого кроку, матимуть можливість із дозволу свого єпископа до вересня 2025 року святкувати нерухомі свята за старим стилем (Різдво Христове — 7 січня, Богоявлення — 19 січня, Благовіщення — 7 квітня тощо). «Для тих парафій чи поодиноких громад, які відчувають себе ще не готовими до такого кроку (за окремим благословенням єпархіального єпископа), залишити можливість літургійного життя за юліанським календарем на період до 2025 року Божого», — йдеться у 2-му пункті 5-ї постанови Синоду.

Пасху і всі пов’язані з нею свята УГКЦ в Україні відзначатиме за старим стилем, як раніше.

«Ми переходимо на новий стиль лише для нерухомих свят. Ми вирішили залишити поки що Пасхалію такою, якою вона є сьогодні. Актуальна Пасхалія залишається в силі», — сказав Глава УГКЦ.

За словами Предстоятеля, календарна реформа УГКЦ в Україні матиме два етапи. Зараз зроблений перший крок. Щодо святкування Пасхи, то єпископи «вирішили трохи зачекати».

Блаженніший Святослав пояснив, що у 2025 році відзначатиметься 1700-річчя Першого Вселенського Собору. Готуючись до цього ювілею, ведеться спільна праця в діалозі між Римом і Константинополем над оновленою Пасхалією, згідно з якою усі християни світу святкуватимуть Пасху в один день.

«Будемо разом працювати, долучатися до процесів вселенського християнства для реформи Пасхалії. Сподіваюся, що це буде справа, хоч недалекого, та все ж майбутнього», — додав Глава УГКЦ.

Глава УГКЦ зазначив, що коли робили опитування, то владики постановили собі: якщо буде близько 70 % тих, хто підтримує рішення про реформу, тоді можемо рухатися вперед. «А виявилося, що є підтримка майже 90 %, і то практично в кожній єпархії. Тобто бажання та потреба календарної реформи виявилася набагато вищою, ніж ми могли сподіватися, і це не може не тішити», — наголосив Блаженніший Святослав, попросивши при цьому всіх вірних послухати голосу своєї Церкви-матері та зберігати єдність й одностайність під час проведення календарної реформи.
